CSSHL U15 Prep: what it is and what to expect
For most players it's the first year of academy hockey — a big jump in ice, cost, and stakes. Here's what the division actually is, what the season looks like, and how to tell whether your player is really developing.
For a lot of players, U15 Prep is the first real taste of academy hockey — and the first time the stakes feel different. It's the under-15 division of the CSSHL, built around full-time hockey schools, and it's where many serious young players make the jump from community programs. If you're still getting oriented to the league itself, start with the CSSHL parent guide.
What the year actually looks like
U15 Prep means hockey is woven through the school day: structured ice, off-ice training, and a long season against other academies. It's a step up in volume and intensity, and it's a step up in cost. The programs vary by academy, so check the current member list and details on the official CSSHL site.
The U15 trap: judging the season by points
Here's where parents get misled. At U15, the players who score early aren't always the ones who develop most. A defenseman might post modest points while becoming a dramatically better skater and decision-maker. If you only watch the standings, you'll miss the development you're paying for.
That's the gap Shift Excellence closes. We turn your U15 player's real games into a Game Report and an OVR rating that updates every game, so you can see whether they're actually getting better — not just whether they scored.
What to track instead of the scoresheet
Points are the loudest number at U15 and the least useful for a development year. Watch the things that actually compound: puck battles won, zone exits and entries, decisions under pressure, and skating. We score your player across six skills and show how each one moves over the season, so you can put your energy on the one or two things that will move the needle. Compare them to division peers with Player Compare, and follow the trend with progress tracking instead of the standings page.
How to set expectations
U15 is a development year, not a draft year. The goal is a clear upward arc across the season. Use real data to set one or two things to work on, then watch the categories move. If you're weighing whether your player is on track for the next level, our honest guide to “is my player good enough” walks through it with benchmarks instead of opinions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why trust the number
Built by hockey people. Backed by real data.
Pro-level evaluation
Designed with coaches who've worked in pro and elite youth hockey — your player is graded the way scouts actually evaluate talent, not by a self-rating.
Real games, not opinions
7,315 players across 6 leagues and 230 teams. Every rating comes from real game data, measured against your player's own division.
The number is earned
Nobody scores themselves. The OVR comes off the ice and it moves as the work goes in — so progress is something you can see, not argue about.
“Every parent asks the same thing — is my child actually developing? For the first time there's a real answer on the ice, not a hunch. This is how pro organizations evaluate players, built for youth hockey.”
