GLOSSARY

Every stat abbreviation and term used in Shift Excellence, defined in plain language. Stats are listed first, followed by app-specific terms.

+/-Plus/Minus

The difference between goals scored and goals allowed while a player is on the ice at even strength.

AAssists

Passes that directly lead to a goal. Up to two assists are credited per goal.

CHKChecking

Rating category for physical compete — body checking, strength on the puck, and winning battles. Graded from game tracking only (hits and puck-battles-won), so it shows "not yet graded" until you add your game stats. Penalty minutes are NOT used here — they measure discipline, which feeds Hockey IQ.

CorsiCorsi (Shot Attempt Differential)

All shot attempts (on goal, missed, and blocked) for vs. against while a player is on ice. Positive Corsi means the team controls possession.

DEFDefense

Rating category for keeping pucks out — defensive-zone play and being trusted in your own end. Graded from plus/minus (relative to your league), sharpened by defensive-zone recoveries and battles from game tracking.

FO%Faceoff Percentage

Percentage of faceoffs won. Tracked overall and by zone (offensive, defensive, neutral).

GGoals

Total goals scored by the player.

GPGames Played

Number of games a player has appeared in during the season.

HNDHands

Rating category for puck skill and playmaking — passing, puck control, and setting up teammates. Graded from assists per game, sharpened by passes, possessions, and controlled puck-carries from game tracking.

IQHockey IQ

Rating category for reading the game — playmaking vision, discipline, and puck possession. Graded from assists per game and discipline (fewer penalties = higher), sharpened by puck possession and turnover economy from game tracking. Smart, low-penalty play.

OVROverall Rating

Your season impact — how productive and effective you've been, graded against others in your league and position (points, goals, assists, plus/minus and discipline per game). It is NOT an average of the 6 categories: the categories are your skill breakdown, OVR is the headline. Grows more confident as you play more games.

PIMPenalty Minutes

Total minutes spent in the penalty box. They measure discipline (fewer is better), which feeds the Hockey IQ rating — NOT Checking. A moderate amount (~1 PIM/game) shows physical engagement; too high suggests discipline issues.

PTSPoints

Goals plus assists combined.

S%Shooting Percentage

Goals divided by shots on goal, expressed as a percentage. Higher means more efficient finishing.

SHTShooting

Rating category for finishing and accuracy — how well a player converts chances into goals. Graded from goals per game and shooting percentage, sharpened by shot quality (scoring chances) when game tracking is added.

SKTSkating

Rating category for speed, agility, and endurance — getting to pucks, joining the rush, and keeping your legs all game. Graded from game tracking only (controlled zone entries, shift length, on-ice involvement) — we can't grade skating from a box score, so it shows "not yet graded" until you add your game stats.

SOGShots on Goal

Shots that would have entered the net if not saved by the goalie. Missed and blocked shots are not included.

TOITime on Ice

Total minutes and seconds a player spends on the ice during a game. Tracked per shift and per period.

xGExpected Goals

A model-based estimate of how many goals a player should have scored based on shot location, type, and situation. Higher xG with fewer goals means bad luck or poor finishing.

ProPro Tier

The $69.99/mo per-player plan — 20 pucks/month (up to 10 game reports) plus unlimited player comparisons at no puck cost on an active plan. Annual $699.90/yr.

Player IdentityPlayer Identity

One of 11 play styles (Sniper, Playmaker, Shutdown D, etc.) that shapes how game reports evaluate your play and what your development plan focuses on. Does not change the OVR — that stays a fair impact score. Sometimes called an archetype.

ChampionshipsChampionship / Playoff Stats

Stats from CSSHL Western Championships and other playoff tournaments. Tracked separately from regular season to show how a player performs under pressure.

ChemistryLine Chemistry

How well a line or defense pair actually plays together, scored 0–100 against your own team — about 50 is an average unit on YOUR team, higher is better. The score firms up as a unit logs more minutes together (a hot 2-game run can't outrank a line that's proven it longer), and it always agrees with its Proven / Promising / Struggling verdict. Goals-together isn't tracked on even-strength lines yet, so those rows show chances and possession instead.

Coach DirectionCoach Direction

The focus areas your team coach sets for your player. They flow into every game report, so the feedback stays aligned with what the bench is working on.

Data StrengthData Strength (how much data backs the rating)

How much real game data backs your ratings — not how confident the player feels. With little data the displayed rating stays deliberately careful; more games and data imports (PDFs, shift analytics, league syncs) let it climb closer to the player's true rating.

Deep Stat ComparisonDeep Stat Comparison

A 1-on-1 player comparison that breaks down how two players stack up across all stat categories. Costs 1 Puck — free and unlimited on an active Pro plan.

Game ReportGame Report

An automated coaching breakdown of a single game — includes grades, period analysis, non-negotiables scorecard, drills, and a development plan update.

GWGGame-Winning Goals

The goal that gives your team the lead they never give back. A clutch stat — shows a player performs in key moments.

League RankingsLeague Rankings

Where a player ranks within their own league — goals, assists, points per game, and more — computed from official league stats (CSSHL, WHL, NCAA, and other loaded leagues).

Non-NegotiablesNon-Negotiables

Three personal development goals you set for yourself (e.g., "Win every board battle," "Back-check every shift"). Graded in each game report.

PaywallPaywall

Blurred content sections that require a subscription to view. Free users see a preview with an upgrade prompt.

PPAPower Play Assists

Assists on goals scored during a power play (when the opposing team has a player in the penalty box).

PPGPower Play Goals

Goals scored while your team has a man advantage (opponent penalized). Shows ability to capitalize on special teams opportunities.

PuckPuck

The a-la-carte currency for game reports and comparisons. $4.99 CAD each. A game report costs 2 pucks; a comparison costs 1 puck. Pucks never expire.

StarterStarter Tier

The $19.99/mo per-player plan — 5 pucks/month (2 game reports plus a bonus puck) plus ratings and rankings. Game uploads are free on every tier.

S%Shooting Percentage

Goals divided by shots on goal. Measures scoring efficiency — how often shots actually go in. Higher is better, but extremely high S% may indicate unsustainable luck.

SHAShort-Handed Assists

Assists on goals scored while your team is penalized and playing with fewer players.

SHGShort-Handed Goals

Goals scored while your team is penalized. One of the most elite stats in hockey — requires exceptional speed, awareness, and finishing.

TOITime on Ice

Total minutes a player spends on the ice during a game. Higher TOI generally means the coach trusts you in more situations. Tracked per shift.
